Planting seeds on a belt: simplicity and reliability of the method

 Planting seeds on a belt: simplicity and reliability of the method

Sowing seeds in a garden bed is a laborious process for a gardener, because you have to be in an uncomfortable position for a long time, especially if the seeds are small. This action can be simplified by placing a ready-made belt with seeds in the planting groove. Planting will take a few minutes and will be much less time consuming.

Benefits of planting seeds on a belt

This method has significant advantages:

  • saving time, especially if you have to plant several beds at once;
  • saving health, because after a long standing or sitting in an uncomfortable position, the lower back will ache or the legs will become numb (which is strictly prohibited for people with cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the musculoskeletal system);
  • saving planting material and additional time and effort: then there is no need to thin out the planting;
  • rescue from pests that are attracted by the smell when thinning crops;
  • the same seed germination time, which improves the quality of the crop;
  • the opportunity to enjoy friendly seedlings, and not be upset looking at bald spots due to heavy rains or buried seeds when planting.

It is a pity that not all seeds can be bought in tape packaging. Their germination rate is one hundred percent thanks to:

  • standardization (purity) of seeds;
  • treatment against diseases and pests;
  • the distance between seeds, which corresponds to their variety.

Buy seeds only from trusted manufacturers, so that later you do not regret the money spent and do not think that the seeds did not sprout due to the planting method.

DIY seed ribbon

The process of making tapes with seeds is a time-consuming task, but the cost is reduced tenfold. In your free time, with good music or radio, and even with the dream of high yields, work will go faster. It is also easy, but it is important to remember that only the cheapest and coarse toilet paper will work for the tape. Procedure:

  1. Discard and process seeds.
  2. Distribute them at the desired distances on the tape, fixing with paste or boiled starch (you need to add potassium permanganate until pink). Seeds of even different varieties can be laid out in rows on a single ribbon of paper. For some crops (lettuce, watercress, dill, cilantro, turnip, onion, chives), they can be spread loosely over the entire width of the roll.
  3. After drying, cut the paper lengthwise if seeds were attached in rows, and roll into rings to make it easier to place in the grooves.

After folding the tape, the names of the cultures are signed

When making seed strips by hand, it is important to remember that different plants require different seed spacing.

Table: distance between seeds on the belt for different crops

Culture nameDistance between seeds, cm
Onion set2, in a row of 3 seeds every 1
Carrot1–1,5
Celery5
Beet8–10
Radish10–15
Radish2–3
Salad1,5–2

Seeds that are planted at great distances from each other can be fixed three at a time - to guarantee germination and if there is no confidence in one hundred percent germination. Then they can be thinned by sprinkling with ground pepper to repel insect pests.

Every time vegetables have to be thinned, I regret that only beets can be replanted without compromising shape or growth. The hand does not rise to throw away, for example, carrots, because the sprouts are strong, even. You can transplant carrot seedlings, but it will be clumsy and split into two roots. Therefore, the tape method is the most suitable for me.

Technique for planting tapes in the ground

To obtain high yields when planting vegetables and herbs on belts, we act in the same way as when sowing seeds in the usual way:

  1. We dig the soil to the required depth in two weeks with the introduction of fertilizers.

    Digging is done with a pitchfork for better mixing of fertilizers with the ground

  2. We make grooves to the desired depth and level the bottom of the groove. This can be done either with the edge of the board, or with a pipe ring, which is as wide as a landing tape. We do not press the ground in the groove so that the young roots can easily grow.
  3. Water the grooves with water with the addition of a manganese solution until pink and / or copper sulfate (50 ml, or 1 tablespoon in a half-liter jar of warm water, then diluted in 8 liters of water).

    The soil in the grooves must be well saturated with water: 8-10 liters per 2 running meters

  4. We put the tape in the groove without twisting (for root crops - sideways, for other seeds - no difference).

    Each crop needs its own seeding depth

  5. We close the tape with a peat composition, lightly tamping the ground. The only crop for which the soil needs to be well compacted after sowing is onion. Its seeds "shoot" after they burst.

    Mulch should be prepared in advance by mixing peat, humus and sand in the right proportions for each crop.

  6. Once again, water and cover the garden bed at a height of 10–12 cm from the ground. Dark spunbond can be used as cover if the culture does not need light for germination.

    The covering material is fixed along the entire length to retain moisture and heat

  7. During the week before sprouting, the soil should be moderately damp so that the paper gets wet and does not interfere with the growth of the roots or the sprout itself.
  8. After the emergence of seedlings in warm weather, we remove the shelter, in cold weather we make a temporary greenhouse, raise the film half a meter above the ground.

    The film on the greenhouse must be transparent to transmit light

Each plant has its own standards for digging soil, the amount of fertilizer per square meter and the depth of sowing seeds.

The main mistakes when planting seeds on the belt

The method of planting seeds on the belt has a number of rules, if violated, you can not wait for the harvest. Errors that should not be allowed:

  • did not align the bottom of the groove. The tape may not reach the ground and the seeds will not germinate;
  • do not spill grooves, assuming that the ground is wet. The tape will not stick to the ground, will not get wet and sag on shallow pits;
  • did not monitor soil moisture. If the ground is dry, the tape will not get wet and the roots will not touch the ground. If the soil is waterlogged, the seeds can rot;
  • covered not with a film, but with mulch. In spring, mulch will only delay the germination of buried seeds. And in dry and windy weather, the earth can dry out.

Reviews of tape planting seeds

The method of planting seeds with ribbons facilitates the work of the gardener, increases the germination of seeds and, accordingly, the yield. If you haven't tried this fit yet, be sure to try it!

The best varieties of carrots for siberia. when can you plant a root crop in the region and how to do it right?

If you want to successfully sow seeds and get a luxurious harvest, you need to take planting timing responsibly! A procedure performed at the right time is the key to successful crop cultivation.

When should you plant carrots? It is necessary to choose the sowing time first of all according to weather conditions: the air temperature should drop to 5 degrees Celsius (or lower), just before the frosts, when the ground is already slightly frozen.

Since there are different climatic conditions in different territories of our country, it is rather difficult to name the universal time for performing the procedure. However, you can indicate the approximate timing of planting carrots before winter:

  • in the Central lane (Moscow region) - about the second half of October
  • in Siberia, in the Urals, in the Leningrad region - tentative landing in the first half of October
  • in the southern regions - to plant in the second half of November, at the beginning of December.

It is extremely important to observe the optimal sowing dates before winter. Otherwise, if planting too early, when conditions are still favorable (warm, humid), the seeds will begin to germinate.

And when the first frosts come, young plants will certainly die, and naturally, next year nothing will grow.

By the way, if it snowed on the day you chose for the procedure, then there is nothing wrong with that. You just need to clear snow from the garden.

Dates of planting carrots according to the lunar calendar of 2020

Many gardeners each year turn to the cycles of the moon for help, it is believed that they can tell the most and least suitable time for the procedure. There is no scientifically proven confirmation of this theory, but many summer residents have noticed a positive result.

So, we can distinguish the following dates for planting carrots before winter according to the lunar calendar of 2020:

  • in October - 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27
  • in November - 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.
  • Unfavorable days for disembarkation:

    • in October - 2, 16, 31
    • in November - 15, 30.

  • What containers can be used, what to plant seeds for seedlings

    Now shops for gardeners offer many products for growing seedlings:

    • peat or plastic pots of different sizes
    • plastic cassettes with pallets with drainage holes, open or made on the principle of small greenhouses with transparent lids
    • peat tablets of various diameters.

    You can choose any kind of containers, pots or peat tablets as long as they are at least 5-8 cm in diameter and have drainage holes. If the size of the cells of the containers is smaller, then the seedlings should be transplanted into a large bowl after the appearance of 2-3 true leaves.

    Eggplant seedlings

    Peat tablets

    When growing seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, I use peat tablets, and then, after 2-3 true leaves appear, I transplant them into large containers.

    Pots and cups

    Peat pots or plastic cups should be at least 7-8 cm in diameter. You can use plastic cups or paper containers for yogurt, dairy products or juices, from which the top with a lid is cut off, and drainage holes are made at the bottom.

    Egg packaging

    I do not recommend the use of egg containers, because, firstly, they are small in volume, and secondly, they dry out too quickly, in addition, the cardboard draws moisture from the potting mix.

    Round or square containers

    Square or rectangular containers use space more efficiently, provide better conditions for the development of the root system of plants than round ones.

    Paper cups

    Newspaper pots

    You can grow pots made from several layers of newsprint. It will cost you inexpensively, and the labor costs are small. The method is also good in that you can plant seedlings without removing them from homemade newspaper cups. The only drawback is the rapid drying of the soil. But I solve this problem like this. I add vermiculite, perlite, sphagnum moss or hydrogel (I buy what is on sale) or cover the bottom of the pallet with a capillary mat.

    How to make a paste for gluing seeds

    To prepare 0.5 l of paste, follow the instructions:

    • Pour 0.4 liters of water into a saucepan, put on fire and turn off immediately after boiling.
    • Dissolve 2 tablespoons in a bowl. starch in 100 ml of warm water.
    • Slowly pour the solution into hot water, stirring all the time.

    The output should not be very thick paste.

    To cook a paste from flour before sowing carrots on toilet paper, follow the recipe:

    • Pour 0.5 liters of water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
    • Gradually add 5 tbsp. white flour, stirring all the time.
    • When the contents of the pan have thickened to the consistency of pancake dough, remove the dishes from the stove.

    Cool the paste and use it to glue the carrot seeds onto toilet paper.

    It is not always convenient to cut each branch with a saw. For thin or non-lignified shoots, flower stems, young shoots near the mother trunk, a pruner is used. To remove, cut for reproduction, to correct the crown - all this can be done by garden shears.

    For thick branches, a reinforced construction device is used - a scissor cutter. But in this case, many still prefer a sharp saw or a special garden hacksaw with teeth directed in one direction. Which option is convenient for you?

    Attention! The pruner is especially important for winegrowers. The vine needs regular pruning.

    Carrots without thinning: the best sowing methods

    Carrots are often planted in the garden together with such crops as radishes, lettuce, parsley.

    Watch the video! Soaking cucumber seeds

    Do not neglect the seed preparation stage. After all, this will significantly increase the germination of carrots by rejecting unusable seeds and observing ideal planting conditions. Moreover, there is nothing difficult in such preparation.

    1. First, the seeds are filled with water at room temperature and left for 10-12 hours. At the same time, empty seeds float up soon. They can be discarded.
    2. Then the seeds are wrapped in a damp cloth and left for a couple of three days at a temperature of 20-25 degrees.
    3. Important! You can soak the seeds in the Epin or Zircon growth stimulator, according to the instructions.
    4. Before planting, the bed must be well moistened. The holes and grooves should be about 5 cm optimal so that the seeds sprout well and at the same time are not weathered from the soil.
    5. The distance between the grooves and holes is at least 16 cm, and between the seeds - about 2-3 cm.

    Watch the video! Preparing carrot seeds for sowing

    • A week before sowing, spill the bed with hot water with the addition of Fitosporin, then immediately cover with plastic wrap.
    • Immediately before sowing, make grooves 2-3 cm deep with a distance of 20 cm between them.
      Spill grooves with hot water with the addition of potassium permanganate or Fitosporin.
    • Sprinkle wood ash over the grooves.
    • Fill the seeds at a distance of 5 cm from each other.
    • Fill the grooves with fertile soil.
    • And for greater germination, close the bed with foil or spandbond.
    • After about 7-14 days, if you previously soaked the seeds, sprouts will appear and then the film is removed.

    Consider these recommendations when choosing a suitable site for your garden:

    1. The area for the beds should be flat, even without a minimum slope.
    2. Necessarily good illumination and sufficient solar heat. If there is a shade from the house or shrubs and trees growing near, the carrots will grow very weakly, the vegetables as a result will not correspond to the expected number and size.
    3. The soil should be neutral, never acidic. Otherwise, the abundance of acid will affect the taste of root crops, you will not wait for sweets from them. As for density, give preference to loose soil. In too hard soil, root crops turn out to be crooked.

    Important! Do not forget about the rules of culture circulation:

    1. Carrots grow well in spring on the land where last year you grew cabbage, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, onions, potatoes or cucumbers.
    2. Plots after last year's cultivation of fennel, parsnips, caraway seeds, parsley, beans, dill and carrots themselves are categorically not suitable.

    Seed preparation

    Therefore, to accelerate the germination of carrot seeds, the following methods of their preparation (processing) for sowing are used:

    • heat treatment or soaking in a gauze bag in hot water (50-60 degrees) for 20 minutes, and then cooling in cold water
    • you can also soak the seeds in one of the growth stimulants, for example, in Epin or Zircon (according to the instructions)

    Carrots love water, so they need to be watered periodically. If the soil is dry, then the crop will give birth to small and tasteless. But if it is too damp, then the carrots will be large and tasteless. Always keep the soil safe, remove weeds in time and loosen the soil. The soil will not be hard, which will allow the carrots to grow evenly and beautifully.

    This takes a lot of time, and few people like weeding carrots. It's nice that this can be avoided. There is a very simple way to sow carrots without thinning.

    The inquisitive minds of summer residents have invented many techniques that later allow not to think about thinning, because carrot seeds are planted far enough from each other

    Indeed, let them grow as they were sown. Is it bad? It turns out that yes. After all, the sprouts will not receive enough nutrients: there will be an excessive number of carrots in a small area. Therefore, root crops will develop poorly, that is, they will grow small.

    The second reason for thinning carrots comes down to the fact that neighboring roots begin to intertwine. This process degrades the external data of the crop.

    They do not require time-consuming preliminary preparation. Often they do not even need to purchase something specially.

    This is the old method of planting carrots so they don't thin out. It resembles how beets are sown: individual seeds must be taken in a pinch and immersed in a small hole in the soil. The distance between the holes can be made from 10 to 15 cm.

    With this sowing, seedlings will appear in bunches. There will already be areas free from crops between them. And then, when the carrots begin to grow, pull out the largest root crops. The rest will get more space and can grow to the desired size.

    It will come in handy if the planting area is large enough. After all, it will not always be convenient to pull the shoots in the furrows in the field. The trick on how to sow carrots, so as not to thin out later, is to mix the seeds with dry sand.

    The amount of sand is half a bucket, and you need to take 1-2 tablespoons of seeds. Then mix everything well. It remains only to sow in the furrows. With this planting, it is important to be confident in the quality of the seeds.

    After all, if they are with poor germination, then you can stay with a small harvest.

    Inquiring summer residents found many simple devices in how to plant carrots so as not to thin out its shoots. Among them: a salt shaker and a jar of toothpicks. From their holes, the seeds spill out little by little, so it is not possible to sow them very often.

    Take radish seeds (lettuce or spinach) and mix them with carrot seeds, add a little river sand to the same container (it will allow you to achieve uniformity when sowing), and then pour them into the grooves in the beds. The radishes will grow earlier, so they will be harvested, and the carrots will begin to grow in the vacated spaces.

    Carrots and onions are also planted in the same bed. This repels pests (carrot and onion flies) and gives an excellent harvest of both carrots and onions. Onions are harvested before carrots, so after the onions are harvested, there is enough room for them to grow and ripen.

    Manufacturers have made sure that planting carrots without thinning is as convenient as possible. Therefore, each seed was "packed" in a shell. Thanks to this, the achenes have become large and they can be easily planted at the distance necessary for the growth of each individual plant.

    The seeds of this vegetable are very small and it is not easy to sow them at a sufficiently large distance from each other, which is why the plantings are dense and you need to spend a lot of time removing excess shoots.

    Trying to facilitate the process of growing root crops, gardeners are inventing new ways to sow carrots without thinning. Various improvised materials, special purchased devices and completely unexpected solutions are used.

    In many cases, the methods of sowing seeds seem to be quite laborious, but the time and effort is more than compensated for by the result obtained - neat beds that do not need to be thinned out. Each gardener chooses the best way of sowing carrots for himself, based on personal experience.

    You can also sow carrots using a paste made from potato starch. Prepare the liquid, chill it, pour it into the kettle and add the seeds. Pour into the beds directly from the kettle and sprinkle with earth. There is a simple method that allows you to get granules with seeds at home. Such planting material can also be purchased at the store.

    To create a homemade blank, you need to cut the toilet paper into small squares. Put a carrot seed in each of them, drip paste and mineral fertilizer. Then the squares must be rolled up and allowed to dry. Blanks of such a plan can be built in winter, but at the same time they can be kept in a dry, warm place until spring.

    The best option is drip irrigation: it allows you to constantly maintain optimal soil moisture with minimal labor and water consumption. However, not everyone has drip irrigation systems. Therefore, it remains to water in the old fashioned way - from a watering can or a watering hose.

    In both cases, the planted carrots should be watered so as not to knock the seeds out of the soil, which means that:

    • the height from which water flows should be minimal
    • drops should be small
    • there should be a non-woven, permeable covering material on the ground, which will protect the soil from erosion.

    The frequency of watering should be such that the soil does not dry out. Usually, two waterings per week are enough.

    With early spring sowing, seedlings develop extremely slowly due to low temperatures and appear within 15 ... 25 days. Under more favorable conditions, you can see seedlings 10 days or even earlier. Be patient.
