Early ripe yellow potato Gala

Early ripe yellow potato Gala

If you are looking for an unpretentious and early potato, check out the Gala potato variety. It does not require constant maintenance and at the same time gives good yields. This type of culture was bred in Germany and it showed itself well in a climate of middle latitudes. Gala is among the top ten potato varieties across the country. Below we will consider a detailed description of this variety, indicate the main characteristics, cultivation features, advantages and disadvantages.

Description

Gala belongs to the early maturing varieties. It is very popular with both individual gardeners and large producers. It is better to start the description with the ground part of the plant. Gala bushes grow medium in size, while the tops are quite large. The leaves are large, wavy and colored in a juicy green. Due to this characteristic, potatoes tolerate drought well. Peduncles are white.

Medium-sized tubers are formed underground. Potatoes are covered with a light yellow skin of medium thickness with a rough surface. The tubers have a regular round shape, less often oval. The weight of one potato reaches 100-120 grams. The eyes of the tubers are small and superficial, so there is no difficulty in cleaning. The pulp has a yellow tint. Peeled potatoes do not darken during processing.

The starch content is kept at the level of 11-13%, so this variety does not boil over and retains its shape during cooking. According to the description of experienced housewives, using Gala potatoes is convenient for soups, salads, stews, and frying. For mashed potatoes, it is better to choose more starchy potatoes. Stores well enough when washed.

As for the yield, if all the conditions of agricultural technology are observed, up to 25 tubers can be obtained from one bush. 21-26 tons of root crops can be harvested from 1 hectare. According to the description of agronomists, the maximum indicators reach 39 tons per 1 hectare of land. Potatoes are stored well, especially if you harvest the tops 1-2 weeks before digging out the tubers. Marketability is kept at 98%, since the tubers tolerate transportation well. The growing season is about 70-80 days.

Advantages of the variety

Gala potatoes have many advantages, which logically emerge from the description of the variety. Most of all, he is appreciated for his unpretentiousness. High yields are monitored on different types of soil from loamy to sandy loamy soils. Good stability allows you to adjust planting dates depending on your individual needs.

You can also safely store it in the cellar, without creating special conditions for humidity and air temperature. Many agronomists note that this variety is extremely easy to care for. It does not require additional feeding during growth and copes well with drought. Potatoes need moderate watering on particularly hot summer days. And Gali has a high resistance to nematodes, late blight of tubers, potato crayfish and scab.

Disadvantages

Potatoes perfectly tolerate many plant diseases, but unfortunately, they are quite susceptible to rhizoctonia.

This fungus attacks and destroys the lower part of the stem. To protect the site from this disease, gardeners need to carefully check the condition of the bushes. In order for the disease not to spread and spoil the entire crop, it is necessary to carry out preventive spraying. A large number of safe and effective drugs are presented on the modern agricultural market.

Preparing tubers for planting

The intensity of the growth of potato bushes and, ultimately, the volume of the grown crop largely depends on the correct preparation of the tubers. Gala tubers are prepared for planting in the ground according to the following scheme:

  1. After the winter period, the potato planting material must be sorted out. In the process of the bulkhead, rotted tubers damaged with an atypical color are removed. For planting, it is best to select tubers weighing 60-70 g.
  2. Tubers selected for planting are placed in boxes with holes in the walls and placed for germination in pre-prepared premises. During germination, the air temperature should be + 13 +14 degrees Celsius. The germination period lasts 3-4 weeks. During this time, sprouts with a length of 18-20 mm should form on the tubers.
  3. Immediately before planting, the tubers of this variety are treated with certain mineral mixtures for the prevention of major diseases:
  4. Dusting tubers with wood ash. For this, 100 g of ash is consumed per 9-10 kg. planting material.
  5. Spraying potato tubers with solutions of copper sulfate (40-45 g of the drug per 10 liters of water).
  6. Soak the tubers for 1-1.5 hours in a carbamide solution. In 10 liters. water dissolve 100 g of mineral fertilizer.

Plant care rules

Further care for potatoes consists in watering, weeding and fertilizing. After the emergence of shoots, they sprinkle with earth (they rake the soil around the bush, filling the lower part). This procedure will help keep young shoots from sudden changes in temperature and help the development of the root system.

After growing the tops by 40 cm, a second hilling is carried out. It is advisable to do the procedure after watering. We loosen it with a hoe, to a depth of no more than 5 cm, trying not to damage the young roots and fragile shoots. Otherwise, you can lose part of the crop.

Water the potatoes with water at the rate of 2 liters per bush. If the weather is rainy, potatoes do not need additional moisture. Gala responds well to the introduction of organic substances into the soil: cow and horse manure, chicken droppings. The period of organics laying is autumn.

During the period of growing potatoes, it is necessary to periodically inspect the bushes to identify pests: bears, caterpillars, Colorado potato beetle. Insects are collected by hand and destroyed. The bushes are treated with drugs that repel pests.

Top dressing of potatoes

It is better to add additional food together with hilling. The first feeding is carried out a month after planting, dry fertilizer (ammonium nitrate or urea) is scattered around the bushes, covered with earth. The second feeding is carried out two months after planting, it should be mineral fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium.

Fertilizing potatoes is done according to the instructions. Excessive fertilization can damage the crop.

Storing potatoes

Gala potatoes begin to be dug 2.5 months after planting, which cannot but rejoice the inhabitants of the northern regions of the country, where rainy periods often coincide with the potato harvesting season and interfere with the collection of tubers on time. Due to their early ripening, these potatoes can be stored earlier than other varieties.

A feature of harvesting Gala potatoes is the need to remove the green tops 10-12 days before the expected date of digging - the need for work is associated with the correct ripening of the tubers.

Gala is also planted on an industrial scale, since the thin skin is not damaged during transportation and multiple packaging, which is of particular value for growing potatoes for sale. Smooth tubers of the correct shape, having practically the same size, satisfy consumer standards.

Gala potatoes, the storage of which has an average keeping period, are laid in storages (basements, cellars, boxes on balconies and loggias in an apartment), having previously sorted from bad ones, cut, etc. If storage takes place on farms in rather large volumes, potatoes are additionally treated with anti-rot preparations. A prerequisite for good preservation is the storage of dry ventilated tubers in storage, otherwise the potatoes will rot, both at home and industrial.
