LANGUAGE AND MEANING OF FLOWERS AND PLANTS

CAMPANULA

Campanula

spp. (family

Campanulaceae

)

In the language of flowers, the bellflower has two different opposing meanings: on one side in fact it is considered the symbol of hope and perseverance due to the fact that it is a rustic and pioneer plant that grows even where other plants would not survive and opens the way to other species; on the other it evokes images that are not reassuring enough to be called the bell of the dead as ancient legends argue that whoever hears the tinkling of a bellflower is destined to die in a short time.

It is also said that the fields of bluebells are inhabited by evil fairies so it is not prudent to stop in those places.

In Scotland the bellflower is called Old man bell which means "Bell of the devil".
