Lawn - rolled and sowing, hedges, planting large-sized trees, flower beds - elements of your garden

A beautiful garden: hopes and disappointments

Completed landscaping in the country. The grass began to sprout on the lawns. I walk around the site, and my mood is getting worse and worse. Where are those tall hedges that designers have been talking about for so long? Where are the even caps of lindens and slender pyramids of firs, thujas and firs?

Instead of motley and wildly blooming flower beds, some pitiful stalks and dried twigs stick out of the ground. And the lawns look like the skin of a leopard. Where it is dense, where it is empty, and they are somehow wretched. Is it always like this? Or just me? There is a neighbor - and the trees are 4-5 meters long, and the rolled lawns are already green. True, he complains, everything has cost a lot. Where is the exit? Of course, the landscapers assure me that I need to wait a year or two, and the picture will change dramatically.

Lawn. There are two ways to make it - sowing and roll. The preparation of the soil for both types of lawn is the same. It is necessary to provide a loose nutrient layer with a thickness of at least 15 cm. It is also necessary to profile it, roll it to the required density. And this is where the differences begin. If the lawn is sowing, then you need to loosen the surface layer of the earth by 5 cm and sow seeds, and when rolling out a rolled lawn, you need to shed the underlying layer (almost to the state of a swamp) and carefully cover the sod. After that, it must be carefully rolled, secured with pegs on the slopes and then spilled again.

Further, in both cases, it remains only to wait. With a roll lawn, the pause will be 2-3 weeks, and then normal operation begins. Walking on the lawn, sunbathing on the grass are permissible, and regular mowing of the grass stand is also required.

With the sowing method of creating a lawn, the first shoots appear in 2-3 weeks, and after 4-5 weeks the first mowing will be required. After that, you will still need to sow seeds on bald patches. Normal operation of such a lawn is possible, as a rule, 1.5-2 months after sowing the grasses.

Each of these technologies has its own pros and cons.

Advantages of a roll lawn:

  • immediately after rolling, it takes on a decorative look;
  • a short time is needed for its survival;
  • the slopes are sodded immediately after the roll is rolled, i.e. there is no likelihood of erosion.

Disadvantages:

  • high cost - 1 m2 of rolled lawn is 120-220 rubles more expensive than sowing;
  • a small assortment of grass mixtures used for rolled lawn (4-6 types), i.e., mainly fast-growing herbs with a powerful root system are used, the cultivation of which in summer cottages is not always justified.

Sowing lawn advantages:

  • relatively low cost;
  • the likelihood of careful selection of grass mixtures for a specific area (transition from the shadow zone to the parterre and sports ground).

Disadvantages:

  • a long time before the emergence of shoots - 2-3 weeks, as well as the likelihood of lengthening this period due to drought or washing away of seeds by rain;
  • a large number of weeds in the first 2-3 cuttings.

Therefore, I would recommend using both schemes in combination for your site. And in the further operation of both types of lawns, there is practically no difference. The same problems in the spring are the grass clumping and damping off in the places where the ice crust is formed. In this case, overseeding and aeration of the lawn are done, since the operation in this case is the same.

Hedges

In our experience, the optimal height of seedlings should be 40-60 cm, but there are also undersized shrubs, their height at the time of planting may be less (20-30 cm).

Planting larger shrubs is possible, but undesirable, since their normal planting density for hedges is 5 pieces per running meter. When planting larger plants, the distance between their roots will be significantly greater (2-3 plants per 1 running meter), and such a dense hedge from below, as when planting seedlings with a height of 40-60 cm, cannot be achieved in this case.

According to my observations, plants in the first year after planting, especially from containers, gain root mass, and from the second year they begin to grow intensively. Moreover, this plant growth is balanced with the growth of the root system, and there is no conflict between crown and roots.

Planting large-sized

Recently, some firms have positioned themselves as unique suppliers of large-sized vehicles. I want to upset them right away. Planting and replanting trees from 3 to 10 and even up to 12 m in height has been known since pre-Petrine times. Therefore, to speak about the exclusivity of such services, to put it mildly, is incorrect. Again, based on our almost fifteen years of experience in in the field of landscape design, I can say that working with large growers requires certain knowledge, experience and love for plants.

Trees with a height of 2.5-4 m with a well-formed and densely packed lump are most well transplanted. These are quite mature plants, and their lump weighs from 80 to 200 kg. Older plants with a heavy lump are transplanted only with the help of a special technique. Unfortunately, the small number of such machines and their high cost lead to the fact that the cost of transplanting one tree with a lump 1.2-1.5 m in diameter reaches 120-150 thousand rubles. In addition, large plants in nurseries must be specially prepared for transplantation. Their roots should be bayonetted (pruned) once a year to form a powerful lumpy root system.

There is one more advantage of planting 2.5-4-meter trees. Unlike their larger counterparts, you can start and continue to shape them directly under your site. And their forms can be more varied and decorative. After all, I really want to, at least a little, but move away from the standard forms that have filled our sites.

Flower beds

A separate and very serious topic, which is now being spoken about quite a bit. The very study of the placement of flower beds should take into account many factors - the illuminance of the site, the soil, the humidity of the site, the purpose of the flower garden, its color range, plant height, plant changes as it grows, peduncles and flowering, autumn colors and many other factors. The choice of flowers depends on these circumstances: annual, perennial, their combination, planting with seeds, bushes, bulbs.

In my opinion, flower beds perform a very important function - they provide a constantly changing background of the site. By analogy with a house, this is a picture hanging on the wall. Moreover, the Japanese have a custom to periodically change paintings in accordance with the season. In the same way, flower beds should bear the stamp of mood. They should show the owner of the site the dynamics of the garden. The garden doesn't have to be tough. Of course, both trees and shrubs change during the season. The size, shape, color of spring foliage and this foliage in autumn - all this has its own dynamics, its own rate of change, but flower gardens make these changes the most harmonious. Moreover, they are not static from year to year. They can and should be changed depending on the mood and state. And as always, perennial flowers are the backbone, and annuals are its living content. The short flowering time of perennials and the abundant, long flowering of the annuals organically complement each other. In addition, the flower garden is a great field for improvisation. After all, what was done on flowers this year can be redone for next year, you can create a new flower garden pattern every year.

Therefore, try to treat your garden as a dynamic environment that needs your constant attention and influence.

Lawns - what are they?

The history of lawns in Russia began, like many other things, during the time of Peter the Great. In 1715, he ordered in Peterhof to remove irregularities that appear near tree trunks during the growth of their root system, and fill all the lowlands with a mixture of sand and clay. In the spring, these flat areas had to be sown with oats, and when they were ripe, they had to be mowed.

Further modernization of Peterhof took place after the death of Peter the Great. Thanks to the work of garden and fountain masters, architects, sculptors, an architectural and garden-park ensemble was formed. The upper garden, used as a vegetable garden under Peter the Great, was transformed into a parterre with gazebos, fountains, alleys and, of course, lawns.

But this was the case in Peterhof, the residence of the tsars. In the estates, however, they tried to create a thick shade for coolness in the summer. Of course, there could be no talk of any lawns in such a situation.

But in Europe, the spread of lawns has reached such a level that there is a need for the development of technology for caring for them. So when in 1832 in Stroud, England, the humble foreman of a weaving mill, Edwin Budding, invented the cylindrical lawnmower, this invention revolutionized lawn care.

What is a lawn?

Today, lawns have become almost ubiquitous. Now there is already a special technology for their creation, and the lawns themselves are divided by type, depending on the purpose. In general, any lawn is a leveled area planted with cereal grasses. Sports, decorative and special-purpose lawns are distinguished for their intended purpose. Sports are created on football fields, hippodromes, various exercise areas, that is, in areas with a heavy load on the surface. Special-purpose lawns are laid on highway slopes, airports, railroad slopes and other structures. Decorative ones are designed and decorate our gardens, parks, lawns near the house, they are used to cover the spaces of city streets. This type of lawn is divided, in turn, into several classes.

This class is considered the most decorative. It serves to decorate the main and main parts of architectural compositions; it is laid near sculptures, fountains, and reservoirs. The grasses that make up the covering of this class of lawns are subject to high requirements: they must be long-lasting, have a thin leaf blade. The lawn covering itself should also be in almost perfect condition, that is, form a dense, low-cut sod and be of a uniform bright green color.

Not all cereals can form such a coating. Thin stems, a narrow leaf blade and a high rate of formation of adventitious shoots are possessed, for example, by red fescue, meadow bluegrass, common bent - these herbs are the main components of mixtures for parterre lawns. But they can be created from white bent fescue, meadow fescue and sheep fescue. The parterre lawn formed by these types of grasses is considered to be of low level. Lawns of this class, of course, are very beautiful, but the thin-leaved grasses that make up them are very delicate and not resistant to mechanical damage, therefore it is strictly forbidden to play and rest on them. Inexperienced care for them will also be a disaster.

This class of lawns, in addition to beauty, must also have other useful qualities, for example, be long-term, shade-tolerant, drought-resistant and resistant to mechanical damage. The requirements imposed dictate the set of grasses from which lawns of this class can be composed. Here, grasses with a wide leaf blade are more often sown: bluegrass and bluegrass, sheep's fescue, furrowed, eastern, perennial ryegrass, wheatgrass without root, common comb and others. But red fescue and boulders can also be mixed.

This class of lawns is usually not specially created or laid, but obtained by cultivating the soil surface and sowing various grass mixtures to the already existing one. They may include not only cereal plants. So, usually legumes are added to them, for example, red, white and hybrid clover, horned clover, blue, yellow and hop alfalfa, sainfoin. When these herbs bloom, attractive, beautifully flowering meadows are obtained.

In addition to cereal grasses, this type of lawn contains various flowering plants: marigold, poppy, gypsophila, cornflower, nemesia, flax, escholzia and others. The flowering of these annuals is interesting for this type of lawn, and its care is practically minimal. While other classes of lawn need to be mowed once a week, Moorish will require you to do this only twice a summer.

These lawns are planted with grasses that are resistant to trampling and soil compaction. For example, perennial ryegrass, timothy grass, bluegrass, fescue.

How to properly drain under the lawn

Let's give one simple example. The owner of the lawn had to leave his plot for a while. During these days long rains have passed. What picture will the owner find when he returns after a long absence? If there is no drainage system on the site, then the result will be the most sad: the luxurious lawn will turn into something filled with water and rotting.

Fortunately, this danger can be avoided. There are several main methods of drainage used in everyday life. It should be noted here that the soil on which you are laying the lawn should be neither overly porous nor too dense. In the first case, the lawn will not be able to receive normal nutrition, since moisture will be absorbed into the soil very quickly. Dense soil is also fraught with danger: it retains moisture, preventing it from reaching the roots of plants.

Drainage can be provided even at the stage of preparing the soil for the lawn. This is done as follows: before pouring a fertile soil layer, it is necessary to create a dense layer of stone or gravel. The total thickness of such a layer is 5-10 centimeters. After the fertile soil takes its place, the drainage layer will be able to protect it from excess moisture. It will also be desirable to give the surface of the site a slope of at least 6 °. This will prevent future stagnation of water on the lawn.

More complex drainage is the lot of specialists. Our company offers simple and effective solutions for creating a drainage system. There are three drainage methods at your disposal, the application of which will depend on the individual characteristics of your site.

So, deep drainage implies the creation of a system of horizontal ditches. Drains are laid in the ditches, from which water flows into the collector pipe. The pipe removes excess water into the well, so that the site remains protected from excess moisture.

Vertical drainage involves the use of pumps. It is they who pump out excess moisture from the well, then removing it outside the boundaries of the site. This approach allows you not only to solve the problem of draining the lawn, but also to do it in the most rational way.

The storm drainage method looks simpler in comparison with the first two. However, despite its relative simplicity, it has demonstrated its effectiveness over the years. This method consists in digging horizontal drainage ditches. Ditches successfully collect and remove precipitation, which becomes especially important during the rainy season.

It should be noted that ditches alone may not be enough to drain the lawn. The main factor here is the location of the site: if it is in a lowland, more sophisticated drainage methods may be needed than the creation of drainage ditches and a storm well.

Our company is engaged in determining the most effective methods. We have chosen as our credo an individual approach to each client. Land plots do not tolerate a generalized approach. Each of them has its own characteristics, its own unique relief, composition and density of the soil. Without knowing all these parameters, it is impossible to create a normally functioning drainage system.

Decoration of the site with plants

When existing objects are added to the dendroplane project, functional zones and paths are marked, the landscape designer fills the empty spaces with plants suitable for the selected style.

If the owner wants to have a ready-made landscape park from the very beginning, planting of large-sized trees is included in the plan. Trees with a crown diameter of 3 m or more are arranged so that their shadow falls only on areas that need shading. Planting of seedlings of pines, oaks, birches, maples is carried out with the calculation of their upcoming adult size.

Then the sunniest areas are marked out for an orchard. Apple trees, cherries, raspberries require maximum light and heat. If the site is blown by the wind, a fence is included in the plan.

Ornamental shrubs are less demanding on light conditions. For many of them, the morning or evening sun is enough. Hydrangea, chubushnik, honeysuckle can be planted in the corners of the house, and maiden grapes and ivy can be planted at the north wall.

Last but not least, garden perennials - the innumerable group of herbaceous plants that adorn the garden in the spring and summer - are spread over the empty spaces of the plan. Primroses, ferns, hosts, periwinkles are planted in shady places. In partial shade, forget-me-nots, delphiniums, lilies of the valley, dicentra feel great. Sunny meadows are filled with peonies, chrysanthemums, chamomiles, geleniums. Milkweed, sedum, purslane are planted on alpine slides. If the site is well planned, it will bloom magnificently all season.

How to make a lawn

In preparing the lawn, care and attention is important, otherwise the seedlings of the lawn grass will be suffocated by weeds. All construction waste must be completely removed, taking as long as necessary. After that, you need to take care of the drainage.

Reference: drainage will avoid stagnation of water under the lawn; when creating sports lawns, a drainage device is mandatory. There are two ways to organize drainage:

  1. a pit with a depth of about 600 mm is torn off, the walls of the pit are given the shape of a square with a side of 450 mm. Large stones and bricks are laid in the first layer in the pit, they are tamped tightly - the layer thickness should be 400 mm. A layer of sand or fine gravel is laid on top (also rammed) - the thickness of this layer is 100 mm. The top layer is laid with fertile soil, followed by tamping (rolling) - a layer of 100 mm
  2. the second method is more complicated and time-consuming - fragments of bricks and large stones, sand (fine gravel) and fertile soil are laid over the entire area of the future lawn. This method is rarely used, the first method of the drainage device is usually sufficient.

So, the debris has been removed, the drainage pit is set up - we continue to make the lawn. Sparing no effort, we will dig up the entire area of the future lawn, removing all (all!) Rooted weeds - for this you can use a manual cultivator. After that, the plot of land is neatly leveled, sprinkled on top with a layer of vegetable soil 80-100 mm (sift it through the mesh beforehand), for example, compost combined with sand and peat. If the existing surface layer of soil is sufficiently nutritious for lawn grasses, the layer of prepared vegetative soil can not be poured, although in this case you will have to devote more time and effort to the young lawn - here the best compromise is to apply a bulk layer in a smaller layer, say, 50 mm.

Having completed the filling of the soil layer, it must be rolled with a roller (weighing at least 300 kg), having adapted for this, for example, a metal barrel filled with water. After rolling, we leave the area of the future lawn for two weeks - subsidence will appear in places and weeds will sprout. We level the area of the lawn again, filling up the soil, removing the root systems of weeds, and again rolling the area with a roller. A day before sowing lawn grass seeds, it is necessary to fill the area with water - it is necessary for the soil layer to be moistened to a depth of 200 mm, therefore, the water consumption should be at least 10 liters per m2. On the day of planting, we introduce a complex of mineral fertilizers into the soil (consumption rates - according to the instructions for them), after which we pass the area for the lawn with a rake. For sowing lawn seeds, you need to choose dry and calm weather. After sowing seeds according to the instructions for them, you need to carry out the next soil compaction with a roller weighing 200 kg, then water the area using a garden hose and a diffuser nozzle. Do not allow the formation of gullies! In the first year, the lawn will require daily watering, a dense layer of sod will be formed only in the second year, but for now, do not let the lawn dry out. If the carpet of young lawn grass is not uniform, in some places it is drowned out by weeds - this is a signal that the area of the lawn is not uniformly wetted. When arranging a lawn in an area with a hot climate, its area is covered with burlap or a special material - sponbond until germination.

It is important to water the lawn at least every day using a spray nozzle (in no case use an open stream of water from a hose!), The water consumption is at least 10 liters per m2.

How is a landscape design project compiled

The design basis is the concept - the idea of the future type of the site. The owner decides whether it will be a shady garden for privacy and relaxation, a place for outdoor activities and parties, or a regular park. When the idea is formulated, the style is defined, the designer gradually develops landscape design project.

  1. Building a sketch plan of the site. The specialist takes measurements of the territory, agrees with the master plan, transfers the scheme to paper, marks the existing buildings and plantings. The diagram shows future flower beds, architecture, water bodies, paths, platforms. The sketch gives the first idea of the distribution of the usable area, the harmony of green and functional areas.
  1. Matching the sketch to the site topography. The topographic survey clarifies where it is better to create a reservoir, build an alpine slide, create a terrace, and lay communications.
  1. Drawing up a dendroplane. Introducing new green spaces into the plan-sketch at a scale corresponding to the size of mature plants. Everything from large-sized trees to lawns is taken into account. Thanks to the dendroplane, the amount of planting material, the compatibility of crops in shape, size, flowering period and their compatibility are calculated.
  1. Drawing up a center drawing. Having a dendroplane and a plan-sketch of the site, the designer marks out alleys, paths, platforms, makes notes about the paving, calculates the amount of materials.
  1. Drawing up a communications plan. On this plan, it is planned to lay water supply, automatic irrigation, drainage, storm sewers.
  1. Drawing up a power supply plan. The specialist develops a layout for cables, power points, lighting fixtures that are in harmony with the site design concept.
  1. Budgeting. After the development of all the schemes, the specialist draws up an estimate of costs, in which he reflects the assortment list of planting material, the specification for building and decorative materials, equipment. The landscape design project includes information about deliveries, unloading, the involvement of heavy equipment and the services of workers.

After the approval of the landscape project by the owner of the suburban area, the studio proceeds to its implementation.
